Development Engineer – Containerized OT Software, Industrial Edge & Automation Systems

Job Title

Senior Development Engineer – Industrial Automation Software & Edge Computing

Overview

The development department is building the next generation of industrial automation and software platforms.

This role combines modern software engineering (containerization, Edge computing, microservices) with deep knowledge of classical industrial automation technologies such as Industrial PCs (IPC), PLC systems, fieldbus protocols, and real-time communication.

It is ideal for engineers who want to bridge traditional OT systems with modern software platforms and shape future automation architectures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop containerized OT software modules running on Industrial PCs and Edge nodes.

  • Implement control‑adjacent microservices for communication, material flow, diagnostics, and monitoring functionalities.

  • Develop and maintain interfaces with PLC systems (e.g., Siemens, Beckhoff, Rockwell).

  • Develop software components optimized for industrial PC hardware, focusing on robustness, resource efficiency, and near‑real‑time performance.

  • Create and evolve Edge runtime concepts such as container orchestration on IPCs, local failover, restart strategies, and on‑site serviceability.

  • Produce detailed software architecture, design documentation, and module specifications.

  • Use simulation, HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop), and automated test environments for validation.

  • Collaborate with Controls Engineering, PLC programming teams, Mechatronics, and IT.

  • Implement industry‑grade security, hardening, and safety requirements in the software development process.

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong experience in software development within an industrial automation environment.

  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as
Python, C#, C++, Go or Java as well as familiarity with PLC IEC 61131 programming languages.

  • Hands‑on experience with Industrial PCs, such as Beckhoff IPCs, Siemens IPCs:

    • Linux-based environments

    • Real-time operation considerations

    • Low-level and hardware‑related tuning

  • Solid knowledge of PLC systems:

    • Siemens TIA Portal / S7

    • Beckhoff TwinCAT

    • Rockwell/Allen-Bradley

  • Familiarity with industrial communication standards:
OPC UA, Profinet, EtherCAT, MQTT, Modbus, CAN, TCP/IP.

  • Expertise in Edge computing platforms and containerized software:
Docker, Podman, OCI images, Linux‑based container runtimes.

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, version control, and automated testing.

Optional

  • Experience with real‑time operating systems such as RT Linux, Xenomai, TwinCAT Runtime.

  • Experience with emerging containerized control architectures or Soft‑PLC systems.

  • Expertise in SIMATIC AX

  • Knowledge of AI/ML at the Edge, e.g., condition monitoring, anomaly detection.

  • Experience with Digital Twin tools or simulation frameworks for industrial automation.

  • Familiarity with warehouse automation systems (ASRS, conveyor systems, AMRs, robotics).

Personal Attributes

  • Strong systematic and analytical thinking, with a passion for building platform‑level solutions.

  • Ability to translate hardware‑related requirements into modular, maintainable software.

  • High degree of precision, quality orientation, and structured work habits.

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills in cross‑disciplinary engineering teams.

  • Openness to new technologies and willingness to drive them into production environments.
